The Tactical Micro-Grid combines a variety of power sources, both traditional and renewable, to provide energy security in potentially hostile environments.  Due to the incorporation of renewable energy sources, it is critical to combine energy storage modules in the design of any micro-grid arrangement.  Traditionally, lead acid batteries have been used as energy storage in most military systems.  With advances in the chemistries of Lithium Ion and Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries these can now be considered as strong contenders to replace the lead acid batteries being used.

A key advantage to both of Lithium Ion and LFP batteries is that they offer 3 times the power and are typically 1/3 of the weight of of traditional lead acid batteries.  The reduction of weight in a tactical environment is critical, and can help reduce transportation costs as well as setup time, due to fewer modules being required to maintain the same and/or a higher power level.  The advantages of this are very apparent.

Another advantage of Lithium Ion and LFP batteries is increased cycle life.  Lead acid batteries have a typical cycle life of less than 500 cycles.  Both lithium chemistries can have in excess of 1,000 cycles.  With higher cycle life fewer batteries have to be stocked for replacement, which provides a savings in inventory and maintenance of batteries.
